True or False- Looking for a job is lame.
So, here I am, still in the job search. Unfortunately its not because I haven't had any offers, I just haven't felt right about them. I know there is something I'm supposed to do, I just can't figure out what it is.
Well, that's not true. I guess I did know what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a motivational speaker for youth.....mostly because I wish I had more of them when I was one. I mean, who didn't come home a new teen after EFY? I love to teach, I LOVE to motivate, but realized that I only know how to if they believe in God. What if they don't? Or have no religious background? Or if the place I go to won't let me talk about Him? So my challenge was what motivates someone to be/do good if they don't believe in a Supreme Being? Hence, I felt I should work in a troubled teen center to figure out what it is that drives them. I was kind of afraid that the answer would be nothing, that I would have to more convince than motivate.
So I went on to look at every possible teen pregnancy, troubled teen charter school, wilderness camp, behavioral health clinic, teen development institute, group home, suicide prevention center, and juvenile delinquency rehabilitation clinic I could find. And I found quite a few I got really excited about.
And then came the resume. And I got a little discouraged at my discovery. I didn't exactly fit the "required" qualifications. I can see the interview now:
interviewer: So, I see you graduated in Geography.
interviewee (me): Well, no. Actually I still have another semester.
interviewer: Oh. I see. I didn't realize that. But seriously, Geography?
interviewee: Oh yes! I love love LOVE it.
interviewer: So, how do you think that is going to help you here, when we clearly asked for a psychology, sociology, social work, or counseling degree?
interviewee: Well, actually, I really liked geography because it studied more than anything, relationships....(more of me trying to convince her that yes, I know where almost every country is, what the culture is like, and what crops they farm, but there's much more to geography than that!)
interviewer: Okay, well, fortunately we don't solely determine your qualifications by a degree, so we'll move on to experience. Tell me how your experience with teens in need will help you.
interviewee: (thinks about previous employment: nanny, doughnut poker, hostess, event planner, physical therapy tech.......this is where I seriously consider standing up, shaking his/her hand, and walking briskly out the door, maybe kicking myself on the way out....)
needless to say, after receiving my resume, no one has come to the conclusion an interview was necessary.

What I love most about this post was making me feel better about my own major (insert sociology).
And here I sit at my designated financial planner desk.
love. it.
I am off to pick up the girls so we can burn bread crumbs and start our Passover observance.

apparently my post was soo great blogger wanted to post it twice! how lovely. now it looks like you have lots of comments...
Too bad they don't interview you because you would be AMAZING at that job. Most people don't even work in the field that their major was in anyway. So...I have one word for you. Faith.
Oh Remi,
You are one of the funniest people! Sure I think they would ask you about your schooling, but I don't think they would really worry about your major. Yes, it is great to have a degree...but I think more important than what you majored in is that you stuck with something. When I interviewed people for Merrill Lynch, it was (yes)~that they had a degree, and also the experiences they have had in life and what those experiences have taught them. You have such a great personality. I think that if you go and hand in your resume to someone in charge (HR) and ask to set up a meeting then they will fall in love with you. Too many resumes are turned in via internet and e-mail and they just fall through the cracks.
It will happen. If you are passionate about it, they will see it in your eyes. You will be a great role model for kids.
Good luck!!!
Cute post! I love how honest you are. Girl, if you want it, go get! Don't let those people tell you no. Those who get where they really want to be fight the whole way there. Good luck. ;)
Hi, my name is Chelsea Williamson. I stumbled upon your blog and read what you said and I happen to work at the Career and Counseling center for BYU, a center that aids students in choosing majors and careers and I want you to know I have plenty of helpful hints and advice I could give you. You can go ahead and give me a call at 801-422-2689 and I will answer it. You see, i have this friend who I call ALL the TIME and she never ever answers and its not like I'm surprised but still, so I know how it feels so go ahead and give me a call. :)
ha ha
Um...i think that your 18 month mission might be considered some intense training in the field of dealing with people. Give your amazing self some credit. The right one will come along at the exact right moment. It will be perfect and I can't wait to see where all of your faith and determination will soon lead you. Hopefully it is to my front door where we can deal with my troubled (non) teens and (very un-pregnant) daughters. And go to Anthropology and do my laundry and make pretty things all day every day. Dream job.
what about working for the Church Education S.. (what does the S stand for?)..
I mean.. what if you taught Release time seminary or something? I don't know.. just an idea. Maybe you could help out with EFY somehow.. those weeks were pretty amazing. Remember?
and I agree with the other girl (can't see her name unless I scroll up)... you need to go meet these people in person. Your mission is definitely enough experience. ;)
Love you. Keep your chin up. Come hang out with me one of these days!! seriously..BEFORE you are way too busy to come over.
If they only knew how great you'd be at it!!! Love the interview :)
