aliens and birthdays

Cole and I got in a very heated discussion about aliens yesterday. You see, I think they don't exist. He, on the other hand, is VERY positive that they do. I think there is life on other planets, sure, but they don't have green bodies and big heads with long creepy limbs and they don't suck people into their spaceships and spit them out. I think that they look like us, and they should probably just hang out, because why not? They'd fit right in.....maybe they do. Maybe we have extra terrestrials living amongst us.

Cole thinks they are afraid because we'll dissect them. Right about then is when he told me all my arguments didn't make any sense.

There's a UFOlogist in our ward.....thus, our Sunday (heated) discussion. I'm pretty sure that there's no such thing as a UFOlogist, I think someone just made the name up.

We decided to bring it up at dinner again with Cole's family. They (obviously) all agreed with me. Then on went our conversation about dinosaurs, bigfoot (or was it the abominable snowman?), and other such important mysteries of the universe.

I think that tells you all how cool my in-laws are.

Say hello to 28 weeks.

Birthday today....Cole is on a ROLL. Cuddling with me this morning in bed, then breakfast. What a gem.

The phone interview

Before we invite a person to come in for an interview, we give them a brief phone interview to get to know (briefly) their story.  This is how my most recent one went.

The girl (let’s call her Watermelondria) had called twice in hopes for a call back (showed determination).  So I was excited.

Phone rings twice.  Mom answers.  I ask for Watermelondria.  I mispronounce her name.  Mom corrects me.  Mom calls for daughter, “Watermelondria, girl who you got callin you so early?” is yelled through the house.  Its approximately 11:30 AM…almost noon people…..just making sure we’re on the same page.

A very groggy “hello?”

“Hi Watermelondria, this is Remi from (unsaid organization), returning your call about the position you were interested in, how are you?”

“From where?” “what?”

“um, (job description responded to recited back to her)”

“oh, yeah, hey, what’s up.”

“I just wanted to ask you a few questions really quickly, is that okay?”

still very groggy…”uh-huh”

“okay, so you said you’d like to talk about an abusive relationship you were in?”

“yeah, yeah.  I be in it.”

“uh, yes, for how long?”

“4 years.”

“How old were you, and how old was he?”

“He be 29, I be 18….oh, sorry, my baby girl just came sat down next tah me”

“oh, you have a daughter?  Is she the daughter of the boyfriend you were talking about?”

“nah….now, I wouldn’t call myself a (vulgar word), but I be permiscous when I be young……my numbers be up in the HUNDREDS girrrrrl.  Is that what you say it? Permiscous?

“Promiscuous?”

“yeah, yeah….actually you know what?  When I be with my man, I be 17 now I think about it.  Yeah, yeah, because I remember, the first thing he ever bought me was for my 17th birthday.  He got me two gold teef.”

LOST

Ecstatic.

So we still don't have a tv, so we only watch what we can get instantly on netflix. We watched all 5 seasons in approximately one month. So here we (I) are (am). Lost junkies. And so happy about it. Don't worry Jack, you and Kate will love each other forever and so will Juliet and James. the end.

colekwando

Usually, Anthropologie home inspires me for days on end. Yesterday, I was moseying my way through a friends tumblr page and found this. THIS, people, is my dress inspiration. Anthro is my home inspiration (although my home looks NOTHING like Anthro). So, readership, look on and be inspired.........
On another, more violent note, my husband has taken to colekwando in the middle of the night. You see, he's not a very nice person....when he's sleeping. Really and truly, the man turns into a beast. I've been awakened from my slumber by karate chops to the face and arms and roundhouse kicks to the legs for simply rolling over (because I wake up on my RIGHT side, panic, and flip over) and GRAZING his body. Even if he has sprawled himself out on my side of the bed, he still feels horribly wronged if I dare to brush by his backside. Sometimes, I wake because I'm freezing cold, and when I try to take some of our blanket back, he huffs and wraps it more tightly around his body. I feel abandoned and cold and can't stop shivering.
And he doesn't care.
As long as I don't touch him.
How can I tame this wild man in the night? I feel hated and abused in the night, and yet, when he rises in the morning, he's all sunshine and roses! And he makes me breakfast and freshly squeezed orange juice and starts a fire and cuddles with me as we watch the sunrise.... but I can't help but watch his every move suspiciously through the corner of my eye, remembering the colekwando kick to the throat the night before....
no bruised bones yet....just a battered ego.

Read only if you have 30 minutes handy :)

I got to talk to Lili on the phone before she went into surgery a couple days ago, and before her transfusion.  Before she was in pain again.

My mom called and said she had someone for me to talk to and held the phone up to Lili’s ear.  She pushed the phone away and said an embarrassed “no”.  and my heart broke.  But then my mom put me on speaker and all I had to do was say her name in the way only I do, in a very bossy, endearing manner.  And she giggled for about 30 seconds straight whilst tears ran down my cheeks on the other end of speaker.  Then she continued to tell me I was having a baby boy, that her toenails and fingernails were pink, and that her dad would NEVER wear pink because he was a BOY.  duh.  And then she giggled some more.  It was wonderful, and heart wrenching to think she would be in pain again in just a few short hours.

She’s okay today.  Her levels are up that are supposed to be up, and she hasn’t had a fever for a whole 24 hours.  But I haven’t been able to hear her giggle again, and that moment couldn’t come fast enough.

*************************************************

Being pregnant is getting hard. I thought getting sick would be hard.  It was.  But right now its really hard.

Some of you may know that eating disorders are about perfectionism most of the time.  They are about wanting to please everyone.  About wanting control when it feels like they have none.  Lili’s sick and I can’t go see her.  And there’s nothing I can do for her.  And there’s nothing I can do for my brother when he cries.  And I can’t go in the hospital even if I was there.  And I wasn’t the one to paint her toenails.

And now my body is changing too.  And I can’t control that.  And now I’m hyper aware of what people say to me (as I knew I would be, but as with everything else, you think that if you KNOW, it will be easier. its not).

I was once told that eating disorders are the hardest addictions to overcome.  Because if you’re addicted to heroin, you stop hanging out with your junky friends and you go places where you aren’t around heroin.  If you are addicted to beer, its harder to avoid with parties and holidays (if you’re not Mormon, of course).  But with food…….you can’t escape it.  You CAN’T avoid it, because that’s what your problem was to begin with!  You have to deal with it.  You have to force yourself (I use the word “force” when I really shouldn’t) to have a healthy relationship with food.  With doing your best (to replace perfectionism).  With needing control.

So now I hear even more loudly my coworkers telling each other how many calories they ate, and they shout to each other what they’re eating for lunch, and they’ll talk about the weight they’ll lose.  And the commercials ring in my ears about the new “taco bell diet” and the new “half the calories, all the same G” Gatorade commercials, and the people might as well scream in my face how they avoided stretch marks when they were pregnant and how much weight they gained and how long it took them to get back in shape.  Even people who tell me I look great seem to be telling me that they are paying attention to my body and what it looks like, so make sure it doesn’t change because they’ll notice that too.  Its such a sick way of thinking, and yet, I find myself mentally rocking myself back and forth, back and forth, telling my healthy self its okay.

But its exhausting.  And its hard to keep drowning out those voices.  Its hard to ignore.  Its hard to take time to feel what I feel  and talk myself into staying healthy.  It seems almost inescapable.

I’m getting too personal, aren’t I?  I’m getting to serious?  Maybe it sounds crazy.  It feels crazy sometimes.

But somehow I stay healthy.  And somehow I seem to be able to get stronger every day.  I still read, I still avoid situations and people, and I still pray for help daily.  Sometimes I feel like I should be over this eating disorder thing already.

And then I realize I’m judging myself. And then I give myself a mental kick in the tush.  And then I’m okay for a while longer.

Guest Blogger Kylan

I stole this from his blog.

If only you knew how proud Ky is of his little angels. If only you all knew how tenderly he smiles at them. If only you all knew how much love exudes from him to this little girl. Not just when she's sick. If only you could see, as I have seen, how little he takes for granted in being a dad each day. He dances with her every night. He sings her songs, even when he doesn't know the words. He encourages her when she has a hard time saying words. He smiles and laughs with her often. Because mostly she laughs. You would find this more precious, more heartbreaking, and more inspiring than you already will if you all knew him.

It's 2:27 on Sunday afternoon. Lili is sleeping. I've been singing made up lyrics to You and I for about an hour. It's time for her next treatment. They just gave her a dose of Morphine and Loretab, hopefully she can sleep through what is about to happen. This is treatment number eight. Two to go. This is day eight.

I'm hopeful, but terrified. I haven't cried like this before. Somehow I know myself better now. I am surprised at how much I didn't know about myself. I've learned more about Jen too. I'm learning. I know more about the human body. I know more about what radiologist do. I know what the attending hospitalist is. I know what an infectious disease specialist does. I know why Primary Children's Hospital is so wonderful. I know more about my relationship with Lili. I like that.

Fear has been replaced by numbness, I think. Jen is a rock. She is stronger than me.
I am grateful for every smoochie Lili has ever given me. I love her. I knew that already. I guess I was still a little unclear on what exactly that felt like. They say love hurts. Excruciating. I want to watch her dance. I want her to tell me to stop dancing. "Oi, Da...Oi".

There are so many kids in this hospital. Many more sick than Lili. She still has her hair. Her heart works perfectly. We are encouraged. She'll be ok.

She is just so little.

Thank you!

thank you thank you THANK YOU for your prayers on Lili's (and her family's) behalf. She is doing much better now that she is at Primary Childrens Hospital in Salt Lake. Apparently there, they know what they are doing. So, she'll be in there for another week or so, has a chest tube draining all the fluid between her chest cavity and her lungs, and her fever has finally come down a few notches, since now she has some food in her to help her little body fight. But we've all come to the conclusion double pneumonia plus infection bites. Right Lills?

Can't wait to play with you, you little angel.
