The phone interview

Before we invite a person to come in for an interview, we give them a brief phone interview to get to know (briefly) their story.  This is how my most recent one went.

The girl (let’s call her Watermelondria) had called twice in hopes for a call back (showed determination).  So I was excited.

Phone rings twice.  Mom answers.  I ask for Watermelondria.  I mispronounce her name.  Mom corrects me.  Mom calls for daughter, “Watermelondria, girl who you got callin you so early?” is yelled through the house.  Its approximately 11:30 AM…almost noon people…..just making sure we’re on the same page.

A very groggy “hello?”

“Hi Watermelondria, this is Remi from (unsaid organization), returning your call about the position you were interested in, how are you?”

“From where?” “what?”

“um, (job description responded to recited back to her)”

“oh, yeah, hey, what’s up.”

“I just wanted to ask you a few questions really quickly, is that okay?”

still very groggy…”uh-huh”

“okay, so you said you’d like to talk about an abusive relationship you were in?”

“yeah, yeah.  I be in it.”

“uh, yes, for how long?”

“4 years.”

“How old were you, and how old was he?”

“He be 29, I be 18….oh, sorry, my baby girl just came sat down next tah me”

“oh, you have a daughter?  Is she the daughter of the boyfriend you were talking about?”

“nah….now, I wouldn’t call myself a (vulgar word), but I be permiscous when I be young……my numbers be up in the HUNDREDS girrrrrl.  Is that what you say it? Permiscous?

“Promiscuous?”

“yeah, yeah….actually you know what?  When I be with my man, I be 17 now I think about it.  Yeah, yeah, because I remember, the first thing he ever bought me was for my 17th birthday.  He got me two gold teef.”

You sound like you were so composed during this interview. I would have been so taken back. "teef". Classic. If only Ben would do something so romantic for me. :)

I heard you while you spoke to this person when she called to follow up to see if she got the job. You handled it gracefully.

By the way, you don't have to be pregnant for the Christmas card to work. Don't forget that you can always have a third person peeking through the Christmas tree or the like.
