just typical work conversations

Yesterday:
  • should I still work after our little man is born? (undecided)
  • if you're mom's best friend just lost her only son and was devastated and asked you to implant his sperm and give them a grandchild to raise, would you do it? (no- this actually happened to my coworker)
  • would you be a surrogate for a sibling or best friend? (yes)
  • if you were unable to have children (meaning you could not produce eggs), would you rather get an egg from a sibling, or a complete stranger? (still undecided on this one...)
  • would you donate your eggs (meaning a bunch of them to be used by complete strangers)? (no)
  • Will you use cloth or disposable diapers? I was shocked at how shocked my coworkers were I am not planning on using cloth. I wasn't sure if they were shocked because they expected more of me, or because they thought I was "green", or both. I was surprised that they were surprised and wondered if I should indeed go the way of cloth.

Oh, I love all of your scenarios, very good questions! When are you due? Guess what? I am having a boy too! Pretty exciting! We can be soccer moms after all!

Green is cool and all, but cloth would be the biggest headache. As if you don't have enough laundry to do with a baby that spits up on everything, it would be at least a daily task, otherwise you have the stench to deal with. Plus, cloth poses an unnecessary health risk whereas Huggies (for example) actually pull all of the goop away from the baby's butt, whereas the cloth can't do that. I can tell you your nurses will recommend Huggies ;)

Disposable for sure! I have a friend who does cloth. She spends way too much time scrubbing poo out of diapers. I couldn't do it!

You make me laugh and smile every time I have any correspondence with you ever. You are the best!!! Interesting thoughts. I agree with many of your answers. Now,..the whole cloth thing. I considered it and even bought one to try on Kailani but in the end I am still adding my part to the landfills. Stinky I know but not as stinky as my home might be since I am the worst at laundry. So many choices with parenthood. Have fun! :)

People say that it's the same cost and same time investment. You don't actually do any cleaning--most people now-a-day that use cloth have a service. You just put the diaper in a pale like you would a disposable and they pick them up a few times a week, wash them and drop them back off clean. It's about 40-60 a month which is about the same I spend on diapers now. More like 100 the first few months with a newborn. 10-12 diapers a day right?

It doesn't make much sense to me. Why don't they just make disposables bio-degradable and both sides would be happy?

Biggest concern? Where would I put it if I wasn't at home?

g-diapers are pretty great if they fit your baby. the liners are biodegradable/ compostable. i love cloth. i'm a part-timer, works for me. it's especially wonderful for the newborn stage. you just throw them in the wash, its so easy. when the poop started to stink (around 9 mos for us) i started using liners, flush with the poop, easy too, but more stinky. i wish i could hug your belly and introduce myself to my ne w little nephew. i really miss seeing you and cole.
